Dodgers News: James Outman Honored With First Rookie of the Month Award

Dodgers rookie outfielder James Outman has officially won the National League’s Rookie of the Month Award for the month of April. He had an incredible first month in the MLB, and was honored accordingly.

Outman joined Clayton Kershaw as one of two Dodgers to win an award for their play in the month of April. In this article, we’re going to be talking about Outman, though. If you want to read about Kershaw’s dominant month and his award, you can read more here.

Outman came out red hot in the first month of the season, slashing .292/.376/.615 with seven home runs, 20 RBIs, four doubles, three triples and 11 walks. He had an incredible OPS of .991 and an OPS+ of 169.

Outman began the season in a platoon, but very quickly earned himself more playing time. While he ended the month in a bit of a slump, his numbers are still among the best in baseball, let alone just among the rookies. He was very deserving of the award, so fortunately, the MLB got this one right.

Outman will look to break out of this mini slump soon, and maybe getting the MLB-wide recognition will help. It’s never a bad thing for a young player to be recognized for their achievements, and it could be good for his confidence to know that he had the best month among NL rookies.

This is, of course, Outman’s first award, but it definitely won’t be his last. If he can continue to play like he did for the beginning of the season, he could find himself right back here again at the end of another month. And if he can play like this over the course of a full season, he could be in great position to win a Rookie of the Year Award. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

For now, Outman isn’t focused on any of that. He’s just focused on continuing to get better, and helping his team win games.

Congrats to Outman (and Kershaw) on the awards! Hopefully there are many more to come.
