Dodgers News: Journeyman Pitcher Recalled from Minor Leagues

The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially made the roster move they probably should have made on Monday.

After the team’s 12-inning, walk-off win on Monday that saw them use seven pitchers and six relievers, and the team’s 5-1 loss on Tuesday that saw them use four pitchers and three relievers, the Dodgers have finally called up some bullpen reinforcements for Wednesday’s day game.

The Dodgers officially selected the contract of RHP Dylan Covey, and optioned LHP Justin Bruihl. To make room on the 40-man roster for Covey, RHP Jimmy Nelson was moved to the 60-day injured list.

Covey was on the taxi squad on Tuesday, although it didn’t make much sense for him to not be activated ahead of the game — but that’s neither here nor there.

Covey is officially on the active roster, and will likely play on Wednesday as the Dodgers bullpen desperately could use a day off.

Covey has a career 6.57 ERA across four MLB seasons, but hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2020. In Triple-A this season with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Covey has a 4.22 ERA in 32.0 innings.

Why Was Justin Bruihl Optioned?

Bruihl won’t have a very long stay in Triple-A. However, he’s thrown a combined 64 pitches over the last three days and likely wouldn’t have been used for a couple games, anyway.

He’ll spend some time resting (technically on the Triple-A roster), and be back soon to continue his dominant bounce back season.

Grueling Upcoming Stretch for the Dodgers

The Dodgers have a game every day for the next eight days before they finally get a day off on Thursday, May 25. They play today against the Twins before traveling to St. Louis for a four-game series with the Cardinals and then Atlanta for a three-game series with the Braves.

After the first two games of this series, and leading up to this grueling stretch of baseball, the Dodgers desperately needed some immediate pitching help, and Covey will provide it.

When it’s all said and done, the Dodgers will have played a game for 13 straight days. Let’s hope the bullpen is able to hold up.
