Dodgers News: LA Picks College Football Quarterback in MLB Draft

The Dodgers used their 20th-round pick to select former Clemson and now Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei with the 610th overall pick in the MLB Draft

Uiagalelei was the No. 500 prospect on Perfect Game coming out of high school, but has not played college baseball. On his profile, he is listed as a right-handed pitcher as well as a first and third baseman and an outfielder. Uiagelelei was drafted as a pitcher and is listed as a potential two-way player.

Initially Trevor Lawrences’ heir to the Clemson Tiger dynasty, Uiagelelei showed promise when he stepped in for the injured Lawrence for a few games in 2020. Fans might remember Clemson’s thrilling 47-40 double-overtime loss to Notre Dame in which Uiagelelei threw for 439 yards and two touchdowns.

However, Uiagelelei struggled in the two following years, failing to throw over 300 yards in a game all but once, and transferred to Oregon State after the 2022 college football season where he is expected to be the starting quarterback.

We have yet to hear from Uiagelelei about the surprising news, and do not necessarily expect him to show up for Spring Training. Uiagelelai would have until Aug. 15 to decide if he would like to become a Dodger.
