Dodgers News: LA Sending 2 Relievers to Boston for Kiké Hernández
The Dodgers opened MLB trade season on Tuesday when they acquired utility man Kiké Hernández from the Boston Red Sox. Hernández will add depth all over the infield and outfield, and will hopefully improve his struggling bat in his career-low year.
It took a little while for the package to be revealed, but ESPN’s Jeff Passan finally got insight on what the Dodgers were giving up for Hernández.
LA is sending two right-handed relievers — Nick Robertson and Justin Hagenman — to the Red Sox for Hernández.
Robertson struggled at the MLB level this year, sporting a 6.10 ERA in 10.1 big league innings. As for Hagenman, he has a solid 2.78 ERA in 55 innings at Triple-A this season, and could make an impact for Boston.
The return is a bit high for Hernández, who’s in the worst year of his career as a pro with a .599 OPS. However, the Dodgers felt that they could help Hernández get back to being his old self, and decided that two minor league relievers was worth the potential reward.
We’ll see if the Dodgers are able to restore Hernández’s bat, and get him back close to his career .737 OPS with LA. Either way, though, he’ll provide tons of depth all over the infield and outfield and be a great locker room presence. Also, his old two-time teammate, Justin Turner, didn’t seem so happy with Boston trading Hernández.

Hernandez has hampered the Red Sox all season. Not only struggling at the plate, but all those costly errors at shortstop——Ugh!
Goodbye, good riddens. Not sure about the return players from the Dodgers: Robertson has a very high era, the Red Sox seem to be getting a lot of those pitchers, but Hangenman sounds like a pretty good bolster to the bullpen.
