Dodgers News: Miguel Vargas Reveals What’s Been Working for Him Amid Resurgence
Dodgers rookie infielder Miguel Vargas has settled in very nicely as of late. After a slow start to the year — both offensively and defensively — Vargas has been playing great baseball.
On the defensive side of the ball, Vargas is adjusting nicely to his new position of second base, and starting to look more comfortable there. He’s been putting in the work to improve, and Dave Roberts has taken notice.
On the offensive side of things, though, Vargas’ improvement has been much more noticeable.
After injuring his finger in spring training, Vargas spent the beginning of the Cactus League unable to swing a bit. He got really good at seeing pitches, so when the season began, he was a walk machine. However, when he got hit by a pitch on the thumb, his numbers dropped.
At one point in April, Vargas was hitting as low as .179. Over the last two weeks, though, he’s looked much better at the plate.
Since April 20, Vargas is hitting .239 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 18 games. Over the last week, since May 2, Vargas is 8-for-30 with three home runs, three doubles, one triple and nine RBIs. His OPS over the last week is approaching 1.100.
Vargas was asked about his adjustments at the plate, and how he’s started to heat up in May. Here’s what he told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.
“I’m just trying to get more rhythm in the box,” Vargas said. “I was getting stuck so now I’m trying to get more rhythm in the box.”
He was asked if all the finger injuries were a potential reason for the inconsistent start.
“Maybe to you but I don’t think about that as excuses,” Vargas said. “I just try to go out and compete every day. Now we’ve figured out something new.”
Hopefully these results continue for Vargas as we get into the middle of the season. April was the month of rookie James Outman. Maybe May is Vargas’ month.
