Dodgers News: MLB Analyst Breaks Down Freddie Freeman’s Consistent, MVP-Caliber Game

Freddie Freeman is coming off a dominant month of May that earned him the National League Player of the Month Award. Freeman slashed .400/.462/.722 in 28 games with six home runs, 17 doubles and 26 runs batted. His 1.184 OPS wasn’t too shabby, either.

Freeman had an incredible 16 multi-hit games, and finished the month on a 20-game hitting streak. He truly made the game of baseball look easy, something he’s been doing his entire career.

Freeman leads the entire MLB in hits since coming to the Dodgers last season with 278 entering Friday night’s game. He’s so good at using all sides of the field, and never looks rushed in the batter’s box.

This week, ahead of the Dodgers vs. Yankees series, our very own Doug McKain caught up with ESPN analyst and former player Doug Glanville to talk all things Dodgers. I highly recommend you watch the full interview, which you can do by clicking the video at the top of the article, or by clicking right here.

One specific topic they got into, though, was regarding Freeman, and his incredible consistency every single day. Glanville broke down Freeman’s game, and talked about what makes him so special.

“He’s consistent in his approach,” Glanville said. “He’s just trying to stay behind the ball, stay inside the ball, hit to the big part of the field. It’s short, it’s compact, it’s simple, it’s patient. And that works with everything. And he’s found an ability to do it (against) lefties or righties or any scenario. He has that calm about him. That’s what impresses me. … Freeman always has his own pacing. He is kind of in control. And it doesn’t matter if you add the pitch clock or not or whatever. He’s in control.”

It’s not easy to stay in control every at-bat of every game in a long MLB season, but that’s what makes Freeman so great. But it isn’t just the hitting that makes him stand out, Glanville points out.

“What’s also so underrated about Freddie Freeman is how good a base runner he is,” Glanville said. “He’s really one of the best base runners out there. Great reads, understands positioning, pays attention, knows the scoreboard and the circumstances. Pushes the envelope and can take the extra base.”

Glanville and McKain didn’t even get into the fielding, one that’s earned Freddie a Gold Glove Award in his career. But overall, Glanville had three letters to describe his season thus far.

“This guy’s on an MVP pace, and he was actually my pick for MVP this year so I’m feeling pretty good.”

As of right now, Freeman has to be considered the second-best MVP choice in the National League, only trailing Braves Ronald Acuna. But if Freeman has another month similar to the one he put together in May, we could be talking about an award that’s his to lose.
