Dodgers News: RHP Gus Varland to Reportedly Be Called Up With Joe Kelly on IL
The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly calling up RHP Gus Varland, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
Varland, who began the year with the Milwaukee Brewers as a Rule 5 draft pick, returned to Los Angeles, and pitched well enough in Triple-A to earn himself a call up. He’s replacing RHP Joe Kelly, who was placed on the injured list around game time on Sunday.
Varland pitched well for the first seven appearances of his career in Milwaukee this season, sporting a 2.25 ERA in eight innings. However, he got rocked in his final appearance, and was ultimately returned to the Dodgers.
With the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Varland has appeared in 30 games, sporting a 2.16 ERA in 33.1 innings. He has an impressive 39 strikeouts in that time, and should be able to contribute to the LA bullpen this season.
With the revolving door of bullpen arms this season, the Dodgers would love anyone to make an impact and stick around. Varland will have a great opportunity to do just that for the next couple weeks.
With Varland coming up, the Dodgers will need to make a 40-man roster move. We’ll see what that ends up being ahead of Tuesday’s game against Varland’s former team, the Brewers.
