Dodgers News: Roberts Hints at Ryan Pepiot’s Future Role

The Dodgers are about to have a very good problem on their hands. For most of the year, they’ve struggled to keep healthy starters around. Guys like Walker Buehler, Andrew Heaney, and Clayton Kershaw have all missed decent chunks of the year with various injuries.

And despite losing Buehler for the season, they should be getting Kershaw back into the mix in September. The veteran southpaw is working his way back from a back injury and is set to re-join the rotation when the rosters expand.

That also leaves the Dodgers in a rare position that they haven’t seen much of this year. When Kersh returns, they will have too many arms in the starting rotation. Dave Roberts hinted this week that Ryan Pepiot will probably be the odd man out, and that could mean a few different things. (quotes via OC Register)

Pepiot just had one of his best outings of the season this weekend. He tossed 6 innings and punched out 7 batters while allowing 2 runs. It was his 2nd win with the Dodgers, but he might still end up getting the option leading up to the September roster expansions.

The good news is that the Dodgers appear to be moving towards setting their playoff rotation. At this point, the only question is if Tyler Anderson or Andrew Heaney fills out the final spot. That’s assuming the health of Clayton Kershaw though.

  1. Dodger’s should go with a seven man rotation. This would keep their starters fresh and limit their exposure to teams they might be facing come playoff time.
