Dodgers News: Ryan Yarbrough Discusses Potential Role with LA

The buzzer-beater deadline addition in Ryan Yarbrough is ready for whatever is on his path to a Dodgers World Series.

Yarbrough joined the team for the first time since his acquisition on Friday in San Diego where he spoke with reporters for the first time.

After acquiring the 31-year-old veteran, many of the questions focused on how he will be used by the ballclub looking to contend for the World Series. Starting his career with the Tampa Bay Rays the unique throwing lefty is used to starting games, opening them, and coming out of the bullpen to pitch.

“With Tampa, you have to be really fluid. Everything was fluid,” Yarbrough said of the uncertain role.

The team was very aggressive in acquiring starting pitching talent at this year’s deadline and ended up only getting one bonafide starter in Lance Lynn, who is off to an undefeated start with his new team.

While Yarbrough started out of the bullpen for the Kansas City Royals he eventually became the first pitcher on the mound for them and looked very promising in his last four starts. In 24.2 innings the lefty has a 2.19 ERA with 15 strikeouts and only two walks.

Dodgers Manager, Dave Roberts understands the potential that Yarbrough brings to the team and is hopeful the veteran pitcher is ready for anything they throw at him.

“I think for Yarbs there’s going to be opportunities to start, other opportunities to come in and pitch the bulk of a game. He’s done them both,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “From what I’ve heard, he prefers to start but ultimately he’s going to do what we ask and that’s the most important.”

Yarbrough can start, but he also may be relied upon to eat innings in a middle relief role as well. With a pitching staff that has lacked the ability to go deep into games with their starter, the veteran lefty may fill in those middle-to-late innings late in the season.

No matter what the Dodgers ask of Yarbrough, he will be ready and he will look to help the Dodgers finish strong and gear up for a World Series push.

“I’ve done a little bit of everything when I was with Tampa. So I don’t think it’ll be too much of an adjustment. It’s just a matter of being ready. And like I said, I’ve made some good adjustments, so just keeping those in good places.”
