Dodgers News: Teoscar Hernandez, Tommy Edman Not Yet Nearing Return
Within three days, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup took two massive hits. Utility man Tommy Edman and right fielder Teoscar Hernández went down with injuries in the same week.
The pair are staples in the Dodgers’ batting order. Hernández’s nine home runs this season ties with first baseman Freddie Freeman for the second-most on the team, while Edman’s eight homers ranks third.
Both injuries seemed minor initially. But Hernández and Edman will reportedly remain on the injured list through the weekend, missing the Freeway Series against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Dodgers placed Hernández on the 10-day IL with a Grade 1 adductor strain on May 6. He suffered the injury the day prior in Los Angeles’ 7-4 victory over the Miami Marlins.
The Dodgers called up center fielder James Outman to fill in for Hernández, but Outman has struggled at the plate, going 1-for-17.
Hernández and Edman faced starting pitcher Emmett Sheehan in live batting practice on Wednesday. Sheehan is also on the injured list recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Hernández may require a short rehab assignment before the Dodgers will activate him. Meanwhile, Edman is not expected to need a rehab assignment prior to his return.
Los Angeles agreed to multiyear deals with Hernández and Edman this offseason. Hernández re-signed a three-year, $66 million contract, and Edman received a five-year, $74 million contract extension.
The Dodgers placed Edman on the 10-day injured list with right ankle inflammation on May 3. The reigning NL Championship Series Most Valuable Player sustained the injury on April 29 against the Marlins.
Edman is reportedly no longer dealing with ankle discomfort while running. Despite making progress toward returning, the 2021 NL Gold Glove winner will not be reactivated until at least after the weekend.
Los Angeles called up utility man Hyeseong Kim to replace Edman at second base. Kim made his MLB debut on May 3 against the Atlanta Braves.
The rookie has impressed the Dodgers through his 11 appearances this month, potentially earning a long-term spot on the roster even after Edman’s return.
