Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin Found a Silver Lining in Timing of Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers RHP Tony Gonsolin started the season on the injured list. The 2022 All-Star twisted his left ankle close to a month ago, and it’s been a longer recovery time than we all expected — even for the righty, who said his ankle wasn’t responding the way he thought it would over time.

Yet, we’re here almost one month after he suffered the injury, and he still hasn’t pitched in the regular season. And even though the Dodgers could use all the pitching they, need especially with Ryan Pepiot on the IL, too, Gonsolin says his injury could have been a blessing in disguise.

The Cat Man caught up with LA Times writer Mike DiGiovanna and said he and the pitching coaches found something in his delivery worth fixing.

“I feel like I’m actually in a better spot now,” Gonsolin said. “I started to create a little bad habit with my landing [foot] and the arm action, the timing of the throw, was a little weird. Prior and C-Mac saw it immediately. They were like, ‘Hey, man, if you’re gonna throw, you need to do it the right way.’ So it’s a blessing that I was able to correct some mechanical stuff.”

Gonsolin is scheduled to return to the rotation sometime in late April, so to be able to fix something like this before the season is tremendous. He had a career year in 2022, and LA will need some of what he brought to the table to this season. We all know what Julio Urias and Clayton Kershaw will bring on their day on, but will Gonsolin be able to carry that momentum that he created last season?

We’ll find out soon enough and see if that fix to his delivery will help him out. The 28-year-old started the season where he didn’t want to be, but hopefully, he plays a significant role throughout the season and into the playoffs (unlike last season).

We can’t wait to see how that new delivery looks, Cat Man.
