Dodgers News: Tony Gonsolin Frustrated With Poor Stretch of Pitching

After an All-Star campaign in 2022, Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin hasn’t had the season he’d like to have up to this point.

In another poor start from the righty against the Padres on Monday, Gonsolin expressed his frustrations with how his year has gone relative to his own expectations and pregame work.

“I’ve been throwing really good bullpens in between [starts] and feel like my catch play has been great. But for whatever reason, I come out here and get on the game mound and it’s a little bit different … It’s been really frustrating just with the results of whatever is happening not going in my favor.”

Gonsolin isn’t the only one frustrated with his performance as a bevy of injuries for the Dodgers’ starting rotation meant that his performance became all the more important to keep the team afloat.

Though Gonsolin is getting some help from recent trade acquisition Lance Lynn and Clayton Kershaw’s return to the rotation this week, the 29-year-old’s spot as a starter could be in danger soon.

In a poor showing from both starters in Monday afternoon’s series finale against the Padres, San Diego starter Seth Lugo accused the Dodgers of stealing signs after the offense picked up Gonsolin from a five run third inning.

Mookie Betts punctuated a fourth inning, eight-run rally with a grand slam off Lugo that knocked him out of the game early in what looked to be one that was dead in the water just a half inning prior.

Despite the Dodger victory, it can no longer be ignored that Gonsolin, for whatever reason, isn’t the same pitcher he was just a year prior.

Manager Dave Roberts will have plenty of questions to answer for a possible playoff rotation and overall pitching staff, possibly even leaving Gonsolin off entirely.

Though that option may seem extreme to some for such a dominant arm a year prior, Los Angeles’ pursuit of a championship may involve cutting Gonsolin out of those plans entirely.

Hopefully that’s not the case, but Gonsolin better figure things out sooner rather than later.
