Dodgers Place Brusdar Graterol on Injured List With Shoulder Inflammation

The Dodgers activated catcher Austin Barnes from the injured list, and optioned catcher Hunter Feduccia to the minors on Thursday. They also placed right-handed reliever Brusdar Graterol on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation and recalled right-handed pitcher Ben Casparius.

Graterol, 26, had been counted on as a key cog in the Dodgers’ bullpen since returning from a hamstring injury on Sept. 10. In seven games, he had allowed only three hits and two runs across 7.1 innings, walking two and striking out seven.

Now, his regular season is over — and his status for the postseason is in jeopardy as well.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Thursday that Graterol is “week to week” with the injury.

“He’s been battling it ever since spring training,” Roberts told reporters, including Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. “Obviously there’s some things going on in the shoulder.”

According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, Graterol was in such pain that he could not play catch after his most recent outing Tuesday.

Casparius, 25, has made two appearances for the Dodgers this season. He’s allowed one run across four innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and striking out five.

The 2021 fifth-round pick made his major league debut on Aug. 31. Now, with Graterol sidelined with a shoulder injury, Casparius could be in the surprising position to make the Dodgers’ postseason roster.

Barnes was placed on the injured list Sept. 16 with a fracture in his left big toe. He missed the minimum 10 days despite having fractured the same toe twice in different places the last two months; Barnes also missed the minimum 10 days in August.

The 34-year-old is hitting .261 with a .327 on-base percentage and .306 slugging percentage in 134 at-bats as the backup to Will Smith.

Feduccia, 27, is 4 for 12 in five games this season as the team’s seldom-used third catcher. Smith is starting and catching Walker Buehler in the Dodgers’ series finale against the San Diego Padres on Thursday, with a chance to clinch the National League West at stake.
