Dodgers Place Evan Phillips on Injured List, Recall Matt Sauer in Surprise Move

The Los Angeles Dodgers have recalled right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer as they placed right-hander Evan Phillips on the injured list.

Sauer has allowed two runs in 6.2 innings this season with a 2.70 ERA. He returns to the team after posting a 1.84 ERA over 14.2 innings in Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Phillips will now take time on the IL to recover from forearm discomfort in his throwing arm while the Dodgers’ pitching injuries continue to pile up.

The 30-year-old reliever had yet to allow a run this season through seven appearances. He added six strikeouts while allowing two walks and four hits over 5.2 total innings.

Phillips is coming off a productive 2024 campaign that ended with a 3.62 ERA, 63 strikeouts and just 17 walks over 54.2 innings pitched. He also led the team 18 saves for a Dodgers team that had no clear-cut closer for most of the season.

The postseason saw similar dominance from Phillips on the way to the World Series, but Phillips would only pitch through the NLCS as a torn rotator cuff sidelined him through the Fall Classic. Before his injury, the right-hander had six strikeouts while allowing three walks and three hits over 6.2 October innings.

He now heads back to the IL — where he started his season — and will hope that his forearm discomfort dissipates and he can return to the mound.
