Dodgers Plan to Change Mookie Betts’ Position Again, Says GM Brandon Gomes

One of the biggest questions surrounding the Los Angeles Dodgers’ offseason is where Mookie Betts will play in 2025.

Betts entered spring training in 2024 as the Dodgers’ second baseman. However, when Gavin Lux struggled at shortstop in his return from a torn ACL, Betts was moved to shortstop for the first time in his career.

Betts played shortstop and second base, before suffering a broken hand. When Betts returned, he went back to right field to finish the regular season and postseason.

Now, heading into 2025, general manager Brandon Gomes revealed the team’s plan for Betts. Gomes told reporters at the GM Meetings that the assumption right now is Betts will move back to the infield in 2025, whether it be second base or shortstop.

Lux, who played second base for the Dodgers in 2024, is under contract for 2025. Moreover, Miguel Rojas, who played shortstop for the Dodgers, had his option picked up by L.A. NLCS MVP Tommy Edman, who also played some shortstop for L.A., is under contract next season, too.

So, if Betts were to move back to the infield, it would create a bit of a logjam, especially if the plan for him is to play second base.

In terms of the outfield, the Dodgers currently have a need, as Teoscar Hernández is a free agent. However, Hernández has made it known he wants to return to the Dodgers in free agency.

While Gomes made these comments now, there is an entire offseason ahead of the Dodgers to finalize their roster and figure out where Betts best fits.

Betts has made it known he wants to play in the infield, though, so the Dodgers may try to make that wish come true for their superstar.

  1. I think I read Mookie preferred playing 2nd base. Felt it was easier on his body. That’s 2nd base, not SS. From what I recall reading/hearing Mookie wasn’t so happy playing short. So if Edman can play right, that might be a plan. On the other hand, while Edman was very good late in the season when he was acquired, he was an absolute stud in the postseason. But can we expect that everyday?

Lux wasn’t mentioned. Is he a FA or just a minor detail? He had a good second half, but lousy first and playoffs IIRC. If he’s still here and expecting to play that throws a big monkey wrench into things. And it’s not like he has a great glove either.
