The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the midst of a World Series battle with the Toronto Blue Jays, but one of the team’s most reliable players is missing.
Left-handed reliever Alex Vesia is currently away from the team because of a “deeply personal family matter.” He has not been with the Dodgers since the team traveled to Toronto for the first two games of the Fall Classic.
In World Series Game 3, Dodgers relievers have a No. 51 written on their caps as a show of support for Vesia.
The Dodgers announced before Game 1 of the World Series that Vesia was not with the team: “It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter. The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”
President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman also spoke on the matter, and the team’s decision not to place Vesia on the Family Medical Emergency List.
“We just didn’t want to have any potential for any kind of pressure,” Friedman said last Friday. “This is so much bigger than baseball. For us, it was doing whatever small part we could to just 100 percent be supportive.”
Manager Dave Roberts also echoed the same sentiment when discussing the World Series roster.
“I think we’re just going day to day,” Roberts said, “with really no expectations (of Vesia returning).”
Vesia was the Dodgers’ most consistent reliever throughout the 2025 season, and the left-handed did not allow a run in six of his seven appearances in the postseason.
