Dodgers Rumors: LA Nearing Deal to Acquire Trayce Thompson

Well that didn’t take long. Over the weekend, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that LA could look outside of the organization for a right-handed bat to fill in for injured outfielder Mookie Betts.

On Monday afternoon, MLB’s Juan Toribio broke the news that the Dodgers are close to acquiring former Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson from the Detroit Tigers.

Thompson played 107 games for the Dodgers during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but struggled to find his consistency at the plate in 2017. To be fair, he also battled a back injury that significantly hindered his offensive productivity.

In those 107 games, Thompson posted a .207/.287/.407 slash line with 14 home runs, 34 RBI, and five stolen bases.

For those that need the reminder, Trayce is the brother of Warriors guard and 2022 NBA champion Klay Thompson so he’s got plenty of athleticism to handle the leather in the outfield. In his two seasons with LA, Thompson played all three outfield positions so in theory, he’ll provide the Dodgers with some lineup flexibility.

It appears that Eddy Alvarez’s poor play in right field in Sunday’s 5-3 loss to Cleveland might have also played a role in the Dodgers pulling the trigger on the Thompson trade.

Trayce is 31-year-old and has bounced around the league since being drafted in the second round of the 2009 draft by the Chicago White Sox. After six years in Chicago, Thompson landed on the Dodgers. Since then, he’s played for six different organizations.
