Dodgers Rumors: Team Interested In Joaquin Benoit

[new_royalslider id=”247″] With the non-waiver trade deadline roughly 24 hours away, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to be connected to trade rumors involving David Price, Jon Lester, Cole Hamels and others.

While addressing their starting pitching need has risen to the forefront of discussions, the Dodgers are also believed to be interested in addressing the bullpen. According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, one reliever the Dodgers are interested in is Joaquin Benoit of the San Diego Padres:

Speculation is abound that the Dodgers are the favorites to land one of the elite starting pitchers that have been made available, but ESPN’s Buster Olney reports the team is most likely to add a reliever before Thursday’s deadline:

Benoit is in his 13th season and first with the Padres. The right-hander has appeared in 42 games this season, and has 16 holds and three saves to go with a 1.88 ERA and 0.84 WHIP. Benoit is under contract for $8 million next season and his deal includes an $8 million team option in 2016.

The 37-year-old can be bought out of his contract after next season for $1.5 million, however his 2016 option would vest should he finish 55 games during the 2015 season.

As Rosenthal notes, the Dodgers may face some trouble in getting Benoit to make the short trip North given the Dodgers and Padres play in the same division.

It’s a reality general manager Ned Colletti previously spoke of and used it to caution as a reason why the Dodgers may not be involved in any trades.

Since that point, the Dodgers traded for Darwin Barney from the Chicago Cubs.
