Dodgers Rumors: Top Hitting Prospect Set to Rejoin LA Roster

Active rosters expand from 26 to 28 on Thursday, with teams allowed to add either two position players or one position player and one pitcher. Dave Roberts said the other day that “a number of guys” were in the conversation to be the position player added to the roster, and hitting prospect Miguel Vargas was one of the players mentioned by name.

Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic is reporting that Vargas will indeed be added to the active roster this week.

It’s not hard to see why. Vargas’s bat has been considered ready for the big leagues all season, with the only question where he would play defensively. He made a strong showing in his brief time in the majors this year, and then he went back to Triple-A and made an even stronger showing there.

Vargas fits the Dodgers’ offense very well. He doesn’t strike out much, hits the ball hard, and isn’t afraid to take a walk if a pitcher doesn’t give him something to hit. He also hits right-handed and pounds lefties, so he fills a position of need (to the extent a team on pace for 114 wins can have a “position of need”).

This move means that, at least for now, Edwin Rios and James Outman remain on the outside looking in. Things could change, still, with pretty big question marks around guys like Chris Taylor, Cody Bellinger, and Joey Gallo. But to start September, the extra roster spot is going to Vargas.

  1. Belli and Gallo to OKC ( or Tulsa) . Can always come back for 40 man roster later. Bring up Outman, Rios, Vargas. Meritocracy applies to position players as well as pitchers.

    1. Are they able to send Belli down? If they can I would. Gallo has been too good to send down in my opinion. I am hoping they sign Thompson for next year he has been great both offensively and defensively. He plays a great center field. Vargas is a rare player. He makes consistent contact and has a great eye at the plate. Plus as he matures will gain power. He is a lock for the roster next year.

  2. First and foremost and in my opinion, I think they need to get rid of Craig Kembrel – he’s as useless as they come and all he seems to do is ‘strut’ around the mound. Sorry, but that’s the way I feel and lastly, I’ve been a Dodger fan (Brooklyn and LA) since 1950 and have seen the good and bad on the field.

  3. Bellinger and Chris Taylor need to be benched!!! They are terrible! Bring up Vargas and Outman. It’s not rocket science folks. Rios should NEVER be allowed in the majors. He’s straight trash.

    1. How do you figure that Rios is “trash”?? Mr. Rios is trying to be successful as a team player on a team that is flooded with great players, so calling him “trash” is confusing as it is fascinating….can’t wait for your response…
