Dodgers Star Mookie Betts Talks About Where His Desire to Give Back Came From

Mookie Betts has widely been regarded as one of the best leaders and teammates, not just on the Los Angeles Dodgers, but around the entire MLB. He is always looking to help out his team in every way he can and sacrifices whatever he needs to to ensure that the guys around him succeed as well. That same selfless and generous attitude has carried on for Mookie off of the field as he looks to use his resources to help those in need.

The star right-fielder has found a way to do so through arguably his second biggest passion outside of baseball. Betts has developed a keen love for the sport of bowling over the past few years and when he isn’t suiting up for the Boys in Blue, one can likely find him perfecting his spin on a different type of ball.

Along with his wife Brianna, Betts hosted his first “Mookie Betts + Friends Bowling Tournament” that raised over $120,000 for children in undeserved communities last month. It was a huge success and the Dodgers slugger has noted that he wants this to be the first of many events he puts together.

It is truly special to see someone like Betts, who has an estimated net worth of $50 million, look to share so much of his earnings with people who are not as fortunate. Many other athletes wait until after their playing career is over and they have been able to enjoy their salaries in their younger years.

Betts joined CBS for an exclusive interview and talked about what drives him at such a young age to give back.

“I just wanna provide the opportunity for a kid’s dream to come true,” said Betts. “Seeing my mom and my dad and how when I was going to football practice, when I was going to baseball games, we were always there early. He would make sure the other kids were good the way I was good. My mom too. We were paying for other people’s food and these type of things, so I just think it got instilled in me.”

Betts’ relationship with his mom has been clear all throughout his playing career and it makes sense that she played a key role in the All-Star staying humble and looking to surprise and delight others when possible. LA has one of the most talented and kind-hearted players leading their roster.
