Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez Makes Revealing Comments About Free Agency

One of the top questions for the Los Angeles Dodgers when the 2024 MLB season concludes is if they will re-sign outfielder Teoscar Hernández. Hernández signed with the Dodgers in January on a one-year, $23.5 million deal, meaning he is currently set to become a free agent after the season.

Hernández has proven to be a phenomenal addition for the Dodgers. Amid an offseason full of major long-term signings for the Dodgers including to Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow, Hernández has been one of the most significant players for the Dodgers throughout the year, and at a bargain price.

This season, Hernández has slashed .267/.333/.488 with 143 hits, 76 runs, 28 home runs, and 87 RBIs in 140 games with the Dodgers. He ranks second on the team in hits, runs, doubles, home runs, and RBIs, remaining a consistent force amid injuries in the lineup to Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, and Freddie Freeman this season.

Hernández made his second career All-Star Game and also became the first Dodger to win the Home Run Derby.

If the decision were up to Hernández, he would stay with the Dodgers.

“I want to stay,” Hernández said on the broadcast, via Doug McKain. “I think everybody knows it. I want to be a part of this team for 3,4,5 years to come, but it’s not in my hands. It has to do with the Dodgers. It’s in their hands. I’m just trying to do my best.”

Hernández has remained consistent in his desire to stay with the Dodgers after his one-year contract expires. He previously re-iterated this wish back in June.

“I want to stay,” Hernández told MLB.com’s Bill Ladson in June. “I don’t want to keep bouncing around the league. I feel good here, comfortable. I think this is a good chance for me to win. That is the most important thing for me. It’s a great group. I would love to stay.”

Hernández is now on his fourth MLB team, after playing for the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Seattle Mariners before signing with the Dodgers. He is currently on his third team in three years and feels he has found a place he would like to settle for at least the new future.

  1. Teoscar has been great with the Dodgers, tip of my hat to him, I hope he continues with the team.

But… Every player speaks to wanting to win, wanting to win a championship. And in approximate order, they sign a contract for,
    Money.
    Money.
    Money.
    Where they’re from.
    Where their wife is from.
    Where they’ve played most recently.
Where Scott Boras tells them to play.

They’ve all seen Bull Durham, they know the speech, “just want to make a contribution, if god willing…”

And they sign for the money. Except that I hope I might be more forthright, I can’t blame them or say I would do it differently, but for the most part they’re looking to their own bottom line, $$$. They love to play ball, they love to do well, they want to put up numbers and they want to make money.

Hit .240, 45 RBI, 9 HR and win a WS title. Or hit .280, 85 RBI, 31 HR and finish 4th. I know what I’d do and it isn’t win a title, I just wish they’d stop watching the movie and quit BS’ing everyone.

  2. Teo strikes out too much, 170, 5th most in MLB. He leaves runners on base, 261, 6th most in MLB. Not great with RISP, 66
    Runners Left In Scoring Position.

I would not sign him and put the money toward getting Juan Soto, Santander, or Profar.

    1. He’s a good clubhouse guy that produces. That goes a long way in baseball. All his teammates like him a lot. But getting a talent like Soto would be amazing but there must be a reason why such a great player keeps bouncing around through teams. It’s a tough dilemma. Hopefully Friedman makes the right decision.

      1. Please resign Teo…..!!!!!
Don’t make a mistake signing that is really not worth it.

  3. What’s with 3,4 or more platoon players playing full time ? We go get
    more ? Kike, RT,
Kiermaier, Pages (up & down). Players hitting below or near
    200. RT can’t hit & Roberts plays him and pinch hits him in critical situations for a sttike out ? They let Heyward go who hits left -handed and still has speed and great glove.
Pitching is critical in baseball, and the Dodgers have been really unlucky, but you can’t win with only 4 players out of nine hitting.
Keep Teoscar in left, Mookie in right (thank god he’s back in right – what was that infield move all z bout), Freeman at 1st, Lux at 2nd, Edman/Rojas at S/S, Muncie at 3rd for the rest of this year, Pages/Edman at center, Smith at Catcher.

Next year get Soto or another outfielder who can hit with Teo and Mookie.

Get a better hitting 3rd baseman (not just homers).

Get better than 190 hitters as platoon players. AND don’t play them full time.
