Dodgers: Tom Koehler Officially Out for Season

Dodgers fans have been waiting all season to see Tom Koehler make his debut with the team. It appears as if that debut is going to have to wait much longer. On Tuesday, Dave Roberts announced the right-handed pitcher had surgery and will be out the remainder of the season.

Koehler, 32, was signed by the Dodgers in the off-season. Having been a starter majority of his career, Koehler was expected to be a valuable arm coming out of the bullpen. On Mar. 3, Koehler was removed from a spring training game with a right shoulder injury.

When the injury initially happened, Koehler was unsure of the amount of time he could miss, saying it could be “weeks” or “months”. At the time, the Dodgers said he wouldn’t require surgery.

“I don’t know how long it’s going to take, but I know the surgery option was not mentioned, and I will be pitching again this year. That’s why I’m sort of upbeat today. It’s just a matter of when.”

Sadly, it looks as if his injury was more severe than initially reported, and he couldn’t recover as quickly as he would have liked.

2017 got off to a rocky start for Koehler. In 12 starts with the Marlins, the righty posted an ERA of 7.92., while allowing 15 home runs in just 55 innings. He was then dealt to the Blue Jays, where he experienced a resurgence in his career, as he was moved to the bullpen. Though he only made 15 appearances, it was the best he’s looked during his time in the big leagues. His ERA, 2.65, was the lowest of his career. His 9.5 strikeout per nine innings were the highest of his career. It looked as if he had finally turned things around.

Analysis

You hate to see injuries happen, especially when they happen to guys like Koehler. He obviously found something that worked in Toronto. Hopefully his surgery is a success, and he’s able to bounce back next year. I’m sure Dodgers fans would love to give him another chance, and see what he’s able to bring to the team. Best of luck, Tom! We’re all pulling for you.
