Dodgers Urged to Acquire Walker Buehler Ahead of Trade Deadline

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been linked to a familiar face as they look to acquire talent ahead of the trade deadline: Walker Buehler.

The current Boston Red Sox starting pitcher’s last offering in a Dodgers uniform was when he historically came out of the bullpen to earn the save in Game 5 of the World Series and clinch the eighth Commissioner’s Trophy in franchise history.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan explained why a Buehler reunion makes the most sense at this point in 2025.

“[The Dodgers] don’t build their team for regular-season wins. They want to put together the most devastating 26-man squad for the postseason. And they saw last year what Buehler turns into in October. The four shutout innings against the Mets. Five more against the Yankees. And then the final three outs to lock down the World Series title.”

The 30-year-old Buehler is in the middle of a 4.44 ERA season with Boston across nine starts. He has thrown 42 strikeouts to just 15 walks over 46.2 innings of work.

Not to mention, there are 15 Dodgers pitchers on the injured list at the moment. Perhaps parting ways with a few prospects in an extremely deep farm system in order to get the former ace back in a Dodgers uniform can be an attractive option to the front office.

Buehler first appeared in a Dodgers uniform in 2017 at just 22 years old. He soon developed into one of the most prolific Dodgers postseason pitchers in recent memory.

Across five starts in the 2020 World Series run, Buehler shined with a 1.80 ERA across 25 innings pitched, including a 10 strikeout performance in which he allowed just a single run in Game 3 of the Fall Classic.

The notorious 2024 run was just as electric as Passan noted, but the legendary story of how he made an appearance in relief on two days rest to clinch the title will be remembered forever.

Buehler had a 5.38 ERA during 75.1 regular season innings in ’24, but his clutch performances in October, especially for a team that plans to be playing a lot during that month, make this would-be deal that much more enticing.

  1. Hmm, LAD could have kept him by tendering a QO, yet they let him walk. I understand and appreciate what Kershaw has meant to this organization and wanting to get him 3,000 Ks in Dodger blue, but to do that and not keep Buehler was inconsistent at the very least. Sure, not all decisions (ahem, Snell, Glasnow, etc) haven’t panned out, but not resigning Walker was shortsighted. Rough outing last night, but only his second start following a bought of bursitis. And he’s a playoff stud.
