Petit managed to escape the trouble by getting Adrian Gonzalez to fly out and Kemp to ground into an inning-ending double play. With one out in the third, Petit worked a long at-bat that ended with a walk.

Kershaw’s inability to put Petit away hurt him as Buster Posey followed Joe Panik’s single with one of his own. Petit scored on Posey’s base hit, however Posey was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double to end the inning.

Neither offense made much noise over the next couple of innings as both pitchers settled in. Angel Pagan let his pitcher down a bit by misplaying a ball hit by Gonzalez that sailed over his head and resulted in a double for the first baseman.

Kemp followed Gonzalez’s double with a two-run home that gave the Dodgers a 4-1 lead. Kershaw tossed a shutdown inning in the sixth, then ran into some trouble in the seventh. Andrew Susac and Joaquin Arias hit back-to-back singles with one out to bring the tying run to the plate.

Kershaw struck out Gregor Blanco, then faced Matt Duffy. The pinch-hitter dropped a flare single into center field that scored a run and also had Puig trip over Gordon. Both players were a bit shaken up but remained in the game.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Kershaw got Pagan to ground out on the first pitch he saw. Kershaw took the mound again in the eighth inning with 104 pitches already under his belt. After recording the first out of the inning with just one pitch, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly went out to talk to his ace.

Kershaw remained in the game and wound up getting through the eighth inning on just six pitches. Kenley Jansen entered the game in the ninth and shut the door on the Giants to complete the series win for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers entered the series with a two-game lead in the NL West standings and concluded it with a three-game lead.
