Dodgers: Watch Star Prospect Cartaya Go Deep Off Former Big Leaguer
Dodgers catching prospect Diego Cartaya has caught the eye of many baseball scouts over the last year. The 20-year-old Venezuelan is ranked as a top 50 prospect by experts and his offensive potential is a big reason why.
On Saturday, Cartaya showed off his hitting chops at Camelback Ranch.

As Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register points out, Cartaya’s spring long ball was hit off of MLB veteran Robbie Erlin. The Dodgers signed Erlin to a minor league deal back in February.
Cartaya’s home run is a reminder of why FanGraphs and MLB.com compared him to all-world MLB catcher Salvador Perez in their scouting reports.
“The power, strikeouts, aggressive approach, frame, and arm strength are all reminiscent of Salvador Perez.”
MLB.com’s Jim Callis believes Cartaya is actually a better hitter at 20 than Perez was.
“Often compared to Salvador Perez because of his size and profile, Cartaya is a more advanced hitter than Perez was at his age…”
The Dodgers are optimistic that Cartaya’s Saturday smash was just one of many home runs he’ll hit in a Dodgers uniform.
