The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-1, to even the World Series at one game apiece heading back to Los Angeles.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched his second consecutive complete game in a historic performance in the World Series.
World Series Game 2 Recap
The Dodgers got things started in the first inning, as reigning World Series MVP Freddie Freeman hit a two-out double, and Will Smith brought him home with an RBI single to give LA a quick 1-0 lead.
Toronto responded with a leadoff double from George Springer and a Nathan Lukes single to get runners on the corners with no outs. Yamamoto got a nasty strikeout on Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the first out, Freeman caught a lineout for the second, and Yamamoto punched out another batter to get out of the jam.
To kick off the bottom of the third inning, Yamamoto hit Springer with a pitch to get a runner on first, and later that same inning, Guerrero hit a single to get runners on the corners again. An Alejandro Kirk sacrifice fly tied up the game at 1-1 as the game soldiered on.
The pitchers traded zeroes for the next handful of innings, turning this game into a true pitchers’ duel.
The stalemate was broken in the top seventh by All-Star catcher Will Smith, as he launched a 404-foot solo shot into the seats to put his team up 2-1. Slugging third baseman Max Muncy seemed to get the memo regarding the dingers and smacked a solo shot of his own that traveled 351 feet and knocked out Toronto’s Kevin Gausman.
During the eighth inning, the Dodgers added some insurance runs by chipping away at Toronto, starting with a one-out single from Andy Pages and another from Shohei Ohtani right after. A Mookie Betts walk loaded up the bases, and a wild pitch to Freeman increased the lead to 4-1. Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice to score another run.
Yamamoto came back out for the eighth inning, retiring the Blue Jays in order and leaving him at 92 pitches. Although Roki Sasaki was seen warming up in the bullpen, Yamamoto trotted back out for the ninth to secure the complete game.
