Ex-Dodgers Pitcher, 2020 World Series Champion, Cut By NL West Rivals
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Sunday they designated veteran reliever and former Los Angeles Dodger Dylan Floro for assignment.
The veteran right-hander cleared waivers and was released on Tuesday. The move cleared a spot on the Diamondbacks’ roster for left-hander Blake Walston, who was recalled from Triple-A.
Floro, a trade deadline acquisition, signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals during the offseason but was traded to the Diamondbacks in a last-minute deal just before this year’s July 30 deadline, with first baseman Andres Chaparro heading to Washington in return.
When the trade happened, Floro was in Arizona as the Nationals were playing the Diamondbacks. Initially, he thought it was a joke.
At the time of the trade, Floro was performing well with a 2.06 ERA and a 2.64 FIP over 52.1 innings. However, his stint with the Diamondbacks was problematic. Floro posted a 9.37 ERA in 16.1 innings.
Despite his difficult stint in Arizona, the right-hander still holds a 3.80 ERA and 3.51 FIP for the season. These numbers should attract some interest on the open market, though it may be limited to minor league deals due to his rough performance in the second half of the season.
Floro was hoping this season would be somewhat of a redemption after a rough 2023 season when he posted a 5-6 record with a 4.76 ERA and seven saves over 56.2 innings, split between the Miami Marlins and the Minnesota Twins.
“It wasn’t a good year for me, I know that,” Floro said. “I had some bad luck, people said, but at the end of the day, I’m the one pitching. I just got to figure out a way to get it done. I know coming back this year, I’m feeling good. I’ve done a couple changes. I’ve been working on some different things, executing pitches a little bit better with two strikes. There’s little things that I can change to hopefully go into next year and it’ll help me out.”
Since debuting in 2016, Floro has played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Dodgers, Marlins and Twins. He won a World Series with Los Angeles in 2020.
