Former Blue Jay Speaks on Play at the Plate Against Dodgers

Boston Red Sox infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who played against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2025 World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays, commented on getting thrown out at home in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 7.

Kiner-Falefa stood on third base with the game tied in Game 7, and made a break for home after Daulton Varsho hit a grounder to shortstop Miguel Rojas. Rojas fired the ball home to catch Kiner-Falefa out by a matter of inches. The utility man came under fire for the short lead he took at third base, with many pointing to the moment as one of the most important of the series.

“There was no cameras in my face after the game,” Kiner-Falefa said. “If it was going to be such a big deal, it would’ve been nice to have the camera in my face and have a chance to speak. It blew up without me getting a proper interview, so I thought that was unfair.”

The Dodgers went onto win the game and the series after a go-ahead home run from Will Smith in extra innings, sealing L.A.’s second World Series championship in a row.

Which Other Moments Defined the World Series?

Kiner-Falefa’s moment, while prominent on social media, wasn’t the sole reason why the Dodgers won the World Series.

L.A. had plenty of their own moments during the Fall Classic, especially in Game 7. Rojas hit his first home run in nearly two months to level the game in the top of the ninth inning, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto made his third appearance of the series just a day after throwing six dazzling innings in the prior game.

Yamamoto threw a complete game earlier in the World Series, and Freddie Freeman had a walk-off home run in a marathon Game 3. While the play at the plate influenced the result of the series for sure, the Dodgers did plenty to ensure they even made it that far beforehand.

Kiner-Falefa is now on a one-year deal with the Red Sox, and will look to return to October with a different AL East team in October.

  1. So did he admit that he should have taken a bigger lead and a bigger secondary lead and he should have run through home plate rather than slide, any of those would have resulted in him being safe and the Blue Jays winning the World Series?

    1. Stop crying about the play at the plate already. Toronto lost. I should’ve, could’ve, would’ve but didn’t, so stop moaning. I hate losers because they cry all the time. Hey it was a great WS with great moments on both sides. Toronto has a really good team and should feel proud for going so far.

      1. The runner at third base also has a third base coach there to help advise the runner about the leadoff taken by the runner. So total blame goes to both runner and coach at the third base.

  2. I think Roger from Santa Monica brings up a good pt. Did Falefa ever address that? If he did why wasn’t his explanation included in this article?

    1. The Manger instructed (through the third base coach) Kiner how far he should lead. Also, they train their players to slide at home and not run.

  3. The game was not decided on that play. Blue Jays had the entire game to win. Only loser make excuses why they didn’t win. The Dodgers were the better team and they showed. #Champion

  4. If you watched the game, his 3rd base coach drew a line on the base path to show him where his lead should be. That’s where he was when the ball was hit… kudos to Falefa for not throwing his coach under the bus.

  5. From what I understood, he went as far as his 3rd base told him, so why blame him. Normally you take your lead depending on where the thirdbaseman is positioned and Muncy was way off 3rd so the coach should have let him take a bigger lead.

  6. Dodgers are overpaid and overpriced on tickets! What a shame to price the guy who has been there forever! Now l do not see how a family of 4 can go to Dodgers stadium! Oh well

    1. You know I go to Dodger Stadium we have a great time. All ballpark are overpriced. The difference with Dodger Stadium is that I know the money I spend is going to keeping a good team. I think my beet taste better than yours. My beer is not filled with tears.

  7. I love baseball the boys in blue are my favorites. That being said all baseball teams are cool they all have a great story to tell I picked up a new team to really like this year the brewers all because of watching them in the post season I like their style

  8. MRo played 2nd base on the play not SS….
I quit reading after that if you can’t get that right what other things are wrong……

  9. How do you feel about the Pages / Hernandez catch? Incredible effort or near disaster.

  10. Smith’s foot was on the plate when the ball hit his glove. AKF was still 2 to 3 ft from the plate. This along with next play Clement Pages Hernandez, best 2 play combo in baseball history. I wish baseball had settled 100 years ago on three balls and three strikes. There’d be a lot more moments like this. Or maybe situations like this being relatively rare is what makes baseball special.
