Did a Giants All-Star Take a Shot at Blake Snell For Signing With Rival Dodgers?

Blake Snell shocked the baseball world on Tuesday night when it was reported he was signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a five-year, $182 million deal.

Snell earned a massive contract to join the defending champs, and signed significantly earlier this offseason than he did last, when he joined the San Francisco Giants in late March.

With Snell in Los Angeles, the Dodgers now have arguably the best rotation in baseball, and are already loading up to repeat in 2025. Snell’s former teammate wasn’t too happy with his decision, though.

All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman, who also signed with the Giants last March and was extended toward the end of the season, posted an Instagram picture shortly after Snell signed with L.A. with one emoji as the caption: The snake emoji.

The account has since been deactivated, leading people to speculate whether it was a fake account, or if Chapman just decided to remove the post and his account.

If it is Chapman, he appears to be calling Snell a “snake” for not only leaving San Francisco after one year, but joining their bitter National League West rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Snell opted out of the final season of his two-year, $62 million deal to reenter free agency this offseason. While he didn’t earn the payday he wanted last winter, it finally came this year from the defending champs.

It’s easy to understand why Snell wanted to accept the Dodgers offer.

Firstly, he gets to sign in late November after waiting all the way until the end of spring training to sign last year.

Secondly, he got one of the richest contracts for a pitcher in terms of average annual value, getting $36.4 million per year (although over $60 million was deferred and he got a $52 million signing bonus).

And finally, he gets to join the defending champs who are considered the favorites to repeat in 2025, giving him an opportunity to pitch important baseball and vie for a World Series.

He also gets to team up with Tyler Glasnow, who was his teammate in Tampa Bay. Oh, and he gets to live in Los Angeles.

The Dodgers and Giants will play from June 13-15 in Los Angeles for their first series of 2025. Snell could possibly get his first crack at facing Chapman and the rest of his former teammates that series.

  1. Or Snell could have signed a long-term deal with the hapless Giants so he could try cheer up Chapman between innings.

  2. Great job to the Dodgers front office. Strike while the iron is hot! On to Sasaki, Teoscar, and Adames!!

  4. That’s what free agency is all about. You have some say over where you play. But it was okay for Chapman when he blew off Toronto and signed with the Giants?
