Jurickson Profar Says the Dodgers ‘Lying’ Motivated the Padres in Game 3

There is a fine line between confidence and cockiness and Jurickson Profar is teetering on the border.

The San Diego Padres left fielder has been fueling the drama with his taunting of fans and shenanigans in the field.

However, he doesn’t see it that way and added gasoline to the fire on Tuesday when he accused the Dodgers of lying.

“I think it motivated us. It motivated us,” he said about Game 2’s brouhaha. “Like all those things — all (that) lying I don’t know, man. It’s a great team over there. I don’t think they need all (that) lying. We just need to play baseball. … Like Fernando’s dancing. You guys are insulting us. You (are) throwing stuff. You do everything. What do you want him to do? He’s reacting like that, he’s dancing like that because of you guys. And they make it seem like no, he’s dancing and taunting the fans. Do you think he just goes to the field to be dancing? Really?”

Profar’s opinion of Game 2 doesn’t seem to be a reality but he will keep telling himself that as long as the Padres are winning.

Some of his teammates moved past the chaos of Game 2 and didn’t want to comment on it.

“I don’t think we should waste our energy on much of that,” Xander Bogaerts said. “Listen, we have something special going on here, and the more we can block out those noises from the outside, I mean, the better it’s gonna be for us. I think that’s the way we should continue approaching it. … We can’t control what people put out there. We can’t control what people think of us. But, as I said, we have something really special going on here, and the more positive energy we have … I think we should take that approach.”

Outfielder David Peralta has been on both sides of this rivalry and has played a key role with the Padres in this series.

“No matter what the situation (is) that goes down, don’t worry, we’ve got your back,” said Peralta, whose double drove in two runs in the second inning. “That’s what we do. We did it today. … We’re good — offense, defense, pitching, starting, relievers. That’s what it’s all about. We come and shut the teams down. The Dodgers have a pretty good lineup, and we just shut it down. That’s what it’s all about. It’s not just about one person. … We’re all together in this, and that’s what we’re doing. We’ve been doing this the whole year, and we’re just going to keep doing it. And the best part is we get better every day.”

  1. No, Profar is not teetering on the border between confidence and cockiness, he’s way past it into cockiness. He can be confident about one thing though, nobody is going to accuse him of being classy. While respecting his talent, he’s got the attitude of a twelve year old. If that.

  2. I thought Profar was a complete jerk for hiding the ball he caught and letting Mookie run the bases not knowing if it was a home run or not. That was pretty low and petty in my opinion. And then there he was taunting the fans sitting in the outfield. He was mostly responsible for the incident of fans throwing stuff on the field. Not that that was OK to do of course.

    1. Absolutely agree, DaveW. Profar intentionally mocked fans, as well as Mookie Betts who was running the bases believing (like most of us), that he had hit a home run. Profar cannot feign innocence pretending not to understand that the fans subsequent actions towards him, that I do not condone, were directly-related. That is childish, but judging from the immaturity displayed by some of the Padres’ players, none of us should be surprised. The Padres are a good team but they seem incapable of not getting way ahead of themselves, which is part of the reason they are not advancing.

  3. For the most part, the Padres are ball players, the real deal. They do, however, have two or three punks. You know who they are.

  4. LOTS of blah blah blah on both sides. But one thing is clear. The punks on the Dodgers side were a few, maybe 20, out of 50 thousand FANS. The jerks on the Padres side were professional PLAYERS, paid millons of dollars to play a GAME. It is much more important that players conduct themselves with dignity and respect despite the bad actions of a few rowdy fans.

  5. Profar was taunting the fans and did hide the ball from Mookie. He had no class. Did that excuse the few fans who were 100% wrong for throwing things on the field later in the game? No. But Machado, Profar, and Tatis are at times unprofessional in their boasting, and taunting. All three should be grateful making million-dollar contracts. Play the game as a professional. Not as a bunch of high school kids in an empty field. You three are always one play away from a career ending injury. I would think at this point that to me it doesn’t matter who beats the Padres now. I hope they finish with ninety losses next year. Arrogance has no place in professional baseball. Take a page out of Yu Darvish’s playbook, Padres. Or Dave Winfield. Or Tony Gwynn.
