Longtime Dodgers Trade Target Won’t Be Moved This Offseason

The Dodgers have expressed interest in acquiring Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette for a long time. The two-time American League All-Star and the Dodgers were linked at the trade deadline. But, once again, the Blue Jays have opted to keep Bichette on their roster.

“He’s very much a part of our plans,” Toronto general manager Ross Atkins told MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. “He’s going to be one of the better players in the game. He has been, over portions of his career.”

Bichette, who was the Blue Jays’ MVP in 2023, struggled this season. He posted a career-low .225/.227/.322 slashline along with a career-low .599 OPS. The Dodgers hoped Bichette’s decline would contribute to a discounted deal for the 26-year-old.

Bichette was limited to 81 games this season, marking the first season he played in under 135 games since the shortened 2020 season. The Blue Jays placed Bichette on the 10-day injured list on June 18 with a right calf strain. Although he returned a week later, Toronto put him back on the IL on July 20, where he remained until Sept. 17. But, his health would not last long. Bichette was back on the IL for the third time two days later with a season-ending fracture in his right middle finger.

Bichette is not the only shortstop the Dodgers have their eye on. Los Angeles has been linked to former Milwaukee Brewers shortstop and current free agent Willy Adames. Regardless the Dodgers already have shortstops on the roster. Los Angeles general manager Brandon Gomes said Mookie Betts will be moved back to the infield in 2025 at either second base or shortstop. The Dodgers also selected the player option of shortstop Miguel Rojas, but it is unlikely he will be an everyday player. NLCS MVP Tommy Edman can play shortstop, too.
