MLB Home Run Derby: Dodgers Outfielder Mookie Betts Makes His Prediction

One of the biggest events of MLB All-Star Weekend is happening tonight at Dodger Stadium – the Home Run Derby. Eight high-profile sluggers, including former Dodgers Corey Seager and Albert Pujols, are set to compete in the Derby. The fireworks will start at 5PM PT. ESPN will broadcast the event, with ESPN2 carrying a Statcast driven broadcast. SportsNet LA’s Jessica Mendoza will be part of the Statcast broadcast team.

In a recent interview with AM570’s David Vassegh, Dodgers NL All-Star starter Mookie Betts made his prediction for who he thinks will win it all.

“It would be hard to for everyone to beat [Pete] Alonso. I just don’t see [it]…I think some people that can make it close, but pure pound-for-pound, power-for-power, I think it would be hard for someone to beat him, but you know, we’ll see.”

Alonso has won the last two Derbies (2019 & 2021) and likely who have won three in-a-row had the event happened in 2020.

Vassegh then asked Betts for his thoughts about Washington Nationals superstar Juan Soto, who could face Alonso in the second round of the Derby if Soto can best Cleveland’s José Ramírez.

“Juan’s such a good hitter, Pete is too, but Juan seems like a game hitter, he does it all in the game. Pete can kind of do it anytime, but we’ll see.”

As of early on Monday afternoon, FanDuel has Alonso listed as the favorite to win the event (+200), with Soto owning the third-best odds (+460).
