Puig hit well in Spring Training, but with the crowded outfield and some concerns over maturity, he began the season in the minors. In his debut against the San Diego Padres on June 3, 2013, Puig went 2-for-4 but it was a defensive play in the ninth inning that had everyone in awe. With the Dodgers clinging to a 2-1 lead and a runner on first base, Puig was sent to the warning track in right field to catch a Kyle Blanks fly ball. After making the catch, Puig threw a frozen rope to first base to double off Chris Denorfia to end the game.
