Preview: Carlos Frias Starts, Jimmy Rollins Sits In Finale
The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost two of their last three games thus far against the Milwaukee Brewers and hope to scrape by with a series tie in Thursday’s early-start game. Last night’s road woes began early when Joe Wieland, making his Dodger debut, gave up a five runs in the first inning.
The injury-ridden rotation is going with yet another replacement starter, but this time, they look to a player who has already made a solid start this season, Carlos Frias. The 25-year-old right hander tossed 5.1 innings and gave up no runs and four hits against the Arizona Diamondbacks last week. Of all the starters called upon in the past month, Frias has had the most solid performance, and if he pitches well tonight, may see a more regular role in the rotation.
On the mound for the Brewers is right-hander Mike Fiers who is 1-3 in five starts this season with a 4.74 ERA. Despite this, his last start against the Chicago Cubs included six strong innings allowing just one run and three hits while striking out 12 batters. When Fiers pitched against the Dodgers last season, he allowed just three hits and one run. The Brewers starter looks to continue that dominance in Thursday’s game.
Joc Pederson sits atop the lineup once again, while Jimmy Rollins, who has gone 1-for-14 in this series, takes a day of rest. Kiké Hernandez, batting eighth, will play shortstop, while Juan Uribe gets the start at third after sitting two games straight. Justin Turner sits although he is currently batting .321 and is 4-for-8 in this series against Milwaukee.
Yasmani Grandal returns behind the plate after A.J. Ellis started on Wednesday night and Alex Guerrero, batting fifth, makes his fourth start in left field this season. The utility man is batting .333 on the season including five homers and 13 RBIs.
