Corbin Burnes Was Surprised How Quickly Dodgers Extended Tyler Glasnow After Trade

When the offseason began, the Dodgers’ biggest priority was to sign two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, and land at least one front-line starter. It’s still early in the process, but the team has already done both.

Shortly after inking Ohtani to a record-setting 10-year, $700 million contract, the Dodgers acquired ace Tyler Glasnow from the Tampa Bay Rays. They quickly extended their new starting pitcher to a 5-year, $136.6 million contract to keep him in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future.

The extension came together quickly. Glasnow said he didn’t care about making the most money. He wanted to be somewhere he felt comfortable, and being from Southern California gave him a chance to come back home.

Still, the extension did come as a surprise to some around the league. This includes Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes, whom the Dodgers have been linked with all offseason.

Burnes appeared on the show Foul Territory and discussed this extension for Glasnow. The 29-year-old right-hander was shocked at how quickly this all came together, and added he likely wouldn’t be interested in doing something similar.

“Yeah, I was kind of surprised. Obviously you first heard the rumors of the Glasnow trade then how quickly an extension came together. You just hear about extension talks being three-four months long, you know, year long before they eventually come together.”

It remains to be seen if the Brewers will trade Burnes this offseason, but if they do, he has made his stance clear. Burnes wants to enter free agency next winter to see what his real value is on the open market.

One of the better pitchers in the game today, Burnes’ desire is understandable. He didn’t completely shut the door on an extension if he were to be moved, but said that he would need to be blown away by the deal.

Burnes is represented by MLB super-agent Scott Boras, whose clients typically don’t sign extensions before free agency. This could be why the Dodgers pursued Glasnow ahead of Burnes this winter. Milwaukee might eventually trade Burnes before winter turns to spring.

With Glasnow in the mix, L.A. may feel more comfortable acquiring a “rental player” like Burnes for one year only. They still have some work to do before pitchers and catchers report to spring training, but the Dodgers are off to a great start.

  1. It shouldn’t be surprising at all. Glasnow wanted to play for LA, and money offered wasn’t a low ball at all. With his injury history, even if he wins Cy Young this year, he still would not have gotten a significantly larger deal.
If Burnes pitches 200 innings with sub 3.00 ERA this year, he most certainly command a $250M+ contract next winter.

  2. Why should it come as a surprise? The whole deal was contingent on signing an extension.

  3. I’m a fan who follows it, but not a student of todays game and the people in it. But Glasnow’s stats sure don’t look very impressive to me, over 90 innings pitched twice in an 8 year career, with a high of 120 last year. I see he does strike out a ton of guys, but outs and ERA tell the real story. Strike out 9, but give up 4 runs in 5 innings and is that a good outing?

Maybe the Dodgers really do know what they’re doing, but from here it sure looks like they spent a lot of money on someone who’ll be on the DL more than he pitches. Oh, sorry, IL. Old habits die hard and IL just doesn’t have a ring to it.
