Gold Glove Award Winner Won’t Play Against Dodgers on Opening Day

The Los Angeles Dodgers will not have to face center fielder Tommy Edman when they face the St. Louis Cardinals in their home opener on March 28, Opening Day across MLB. Edman, who underwent surgery on his right wrist last fall, is still dealing with inflammation that has held him back. Edman has been ruled out of the game and will be placed on the team’s 10-day injured list, via John Denton of MLB.com.

Edman is a key defender for the Cardinals, having succeeded at multiple positions from second base to shortstop and now the outfield. As a former Gold Glove and Fielding Bible award winner, Edman has been one of the more consistent Cardinals since coming up to the major leagues in 2019.

However, Edman’s start to the year has been derailed due to this inflammation. He has been shut down from Spring Training three times this year due to his wrist.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol described how Edman has been feeling after the news was announced.

“He’s extremely frustrated. There was a question whether he would be able to play the first game of spring, but he definitely wanted to participate in the games here before Opening Day. But that’s not going to be possible.”

Instead, the Dodgers will likely face Dylan Carlson filling in for Edman at centerfield. This will be the Dodgers’ third regular season game of the year, after two against the San Diego Padres in South Korea. This will also be the home debut of the Dodgers’ ferocious batting lineup including Shohei Ohtani.
