How They Got Here

The Dodgers claimed their eighth straight NL West crown in 2020 going 43-17 in the shortened 60-game season. Paced by offseason trade acquisition Mookie Betts (16) and resurgent outfielder A.J. Pollock (16), LA lead baseball in home runs with 118.

The San Diego Padres clinched their first playoff berth in 14 years with a 37-23 record, second in the National League. Dynamic shortstop Fernando Tatis hit the second-most homers in the NL (17). Teammate and former Dodger Manny Machado was right behind him with 16 en route to a club total of 95, third in the NL.

Each club features a pair of NL MVP hopefuls in Betts and Corey Seager for LA, and Tatis Jr and Machado for SD.

On the pitching front, the Dodgers anchored by long-time ace Clayton Kershaw lead MLB in team ERA (3.02). After a flurry of trade deadline moves, the Padres reinforced their pitching staff by adding starter Mike Clevinger and closer Trevor Rosenthal. However, Clevinger along with staff co-ace Dinelson Lamet missed the Wild Card series dealing with arm injuries. San Diego hopes one or both can be healthy enough to start against the Dodgers in the NLDS.

  1. So the Dodgers have home field advantage, but aren’t playing at home, and have will have no fans in attendance. Not much advantage there, huh? I still don’t see why we can’t play real home games in the postseason. Didn’t we just finish a regular season that way?
