Top Free Agent Reliever Pretty Much Says He Wants to Sign With Dodgers

Former Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald has entered free agency and is searching for his next team.

During an appearance on the Foul Territory show on Wednesday, he shared insights into what he’s seeking in his next opportunity.

However, it sounds like he has his mind made up and wants to pitch for a specific team in 2025.

During a recent appearance on the “Foul Territory” show, Sewald said he is focused on finding the best situation for him and mentioned the Los Angeles Dodgers as a potential fit even if means not having a set closer role.

“The most important thing that I want is to go to a situation where I’m going to be comfortable and I can pitch my best,” Sewald said. “Now, if that’s in the eighth inning in L.A., then that’s the eighth inning in L.A. If it’s the ninth inning somewhere else, then that’s where I’m going to take it. I think for me, most importantly, I’ve shown that I can be a closer.”

It’s notable how frequently Sewald mentioned the Dodgers, indicating they’re clearly on his radar. It makes sense, given Los Angeles just secured a World Series title and is poised to be even stronger next year with several injured pitchers expected to return.

“I just need to make sure I am in the best situation for me and my family, and somewhere where I’m going to be the best version of myself. I wasn’t necessarily the best version of myself this year, so that is all I’m focused on, is trying to figure out what organization is going to bring out the best in me. Whether it’s new coaches, new analytics, new ideas, and then we’re going to go from there.

“If it’s L.A., they have lots of closers. Lots of people get a chance in the ninth inning. So if it’s Evan Phillips, Michael Kopech, me, or anybody else, that’s part of the situation there and I’ll take that into consideration and we’ll go from there.”

The 34-year-old reliever wrapped up the season with a 1-2 record and a 4.31 ERA for the Diamondbacks. At one point, he lost his role as closer but still managed to record 16 saves across 39.2 innings in 42 appearances.

  1. Save money. Give the young players a chance to battle it out at shortstop.
Tommy Edman should be a good choice. Chris Taylor can battle for it.
Sometimes, players need the security of knowing that just because you make a mistake or are struggling a bit, it’s not the end of the road. Getting Adame is I believe a big mistake. He strikes out a lot. Over a hundred times per season. Just saying..Go win another Championship with the talent we have. Good managers can manage with what they have. Peace

  2. 4.31 ERA and lost his role as closer last season. Why is he being talked about?

  3. As a Diamondbacks fan I truly wish he would go to the dodgers but they know better, they were the first team that lit him up game after game. (He won’t be back next year as a diamondback and I don’t know if he gets signed by anyone, the American league is already onto him and now the Ntional league has caught on as well). [It blows my mind that he considers himself deserving of dodger money ? I guess he thinks he deserves Yankee money too, he will be lucky to get Marlin money ?]
