What Positions Will the Dodgers Upgrade at the Trade Deadline?

The trade deadline is less than a month away and the Los Angeles Dodgers have a comfortable 7.5-game in the National League West. Is there a position the Dodgers should upgrade before then?

Major League Baseball insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today joined Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain on Monday’s episode of Dodgers Dugout to discuss what position the club could be looking for in the coming weeks.

“They would like to get another outfielder. I think that’s been a problem. I don’t think that’s gonna be an easy fix.” Nightengale said. “They’ll get some bullpen help, you can always find that. And maybe one more starter. Right now it’s you know, relying on (Tyler) Glasnow and a lot of question marks. I don’t think they thought Buehler would have these kind of struggles. Gavin Stone has stepped up, but they need one more starter. You know a guy like Zach Eflin, I’m throwing out someone like that. You won’t have to give up a ton for him.”

According to Nightengale, Mookie Betts is the key to everything. He won’t be the same player immediately when he returns from the injured list and Miguel Rojas might stay at shortstop while Betts moves to second. But, the outfield has been the weakest link all season.

Whichever combination manager Dave Roberts puts on the field, hasn’t consistently produced all season. Betts could move back to right field, which isn’t ideal, but is a quick fix leaving second base to be figured out.

Two outfielders that have also been linked to the Dodgers are Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena and young star Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox. Arozarena doesn’t have the regular season numbers but has proven himself more than once in the postseason.

Regardless of what happens, the immediate future of the Dodgers hinges on Betts and his versatility when he returns from his fractured hand.

  1. They need a 3B or SP foremost.
Bullpen will be OK with someone or 2 coming back BUT even as is compared to SP issue and #B black hole (offensively)
