Why Are Dodgers Slow-Playing All Pitcher Injuries? Dave Roberts Answers

The Los Angeles Dodgers currently have 15 pitchers on the injured list, an indication that the injury woes from last season have only resumed in 2025.

Nevertheless, manager Dave Roberts remains optimistic most pitchers who are currently sidelined will return as the season progresses.

Luis Garcia, Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, Gavin Stone, Emmet Sheehan, River Ryan, Evan Phillips, Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol, Kyle Hurt, Michael Grove, Edgardo Henriquez, Roki Sasaki, and Kirby Yates are all on the IL.

“I’m very confident we’re going to get them all back,” Roberts said Wednesday. “I just don’t know when.”

While the Dodgers expect several pitchers to return in the second-half of the season, Roberts revealed the priority is to preserve as many arms for October.

“As far as return to play, there’s certainly a cautiousness to it,” Roberts said. “Because as you start getting into the middle of the year, then any setback could be detrimental for the rest of the season.”

The 2024 season served as a cautionary tale for the Dodgers. While the team reached the ultimate goal of hoisting the Commissioner’s Trophy, the injury-riddled pitching staff only made the journey through October more complex.

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman admitted injuries propelled the front office to aggressively pursue pitching talent last offseason. Despite those successful efforts, the health of the Dodgers pitching staff remains a concern in 2025.

  1. Keep signing pitchers with a history of injury. Makes a lot of sense. Have led the league for 3 straight years now with the most pitchers on the IL. Doing a good job Friedman.

  2. I have complained for years now (like anyone cares) that one reason the Dodgers have so many injuries to pitchers is that they are not as knowledgeable as they should be in nurturing pitchers from the time they sign them. As I have mentioned many times (like anyone cares) one thing that is not done any more is the full wind-up. Back in “the day”, pitchers used the full wind and although there are probably many reasons, pitchers seemed to have longer careers with fewer injuries. I just think (like anyone cares) having the pitchers use a full wind-up MIGHT be one way to keep pitchers healthy.

    1. Mike, Glenn, you may very well be on to something here, & be right. Long marches into the postseason is another reason too.

But the pitching coach & training staff should take the blame here. The Dodgers consistently rank among the most injury prone team for pitchers in all the majors. Why?

And why isn’t this being seriously discussed & looked at??
