Will Dodgers Target Starting Pitcher at Trade Deadline? Andrew Friedman Answers

With the trade deadline looming, the Los Angeles Dodgers are believed to be one of the biggest buyers on the market.

There are a few different areas that LA can improve upon before the final stretch of the season, so the question that remains is where exactly the Dodgers will be buying. With constant pitching injuries that have plagued the Dodgers’ roster this season, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman was asked if starting pitching help would be an area that his team shoots for before July 31.

“I feel very confident that’s not an area we will be focused on in the market,” Friedman said.

“We feel like we’re going to have the most high-class problem possible which is to have more guys available than spots.”

The same pitching roster that has been hampered by injuries is set to get a few key pieces back before the postseason.

Two-time Cy Young award winner Blake Snell has likely made his final rehab start in Triple-A Oklahoma City, phenom right-hander Roki Sasaki is looking to make a late-season return, and relievers Blake Treinen and Michael Kopech are steadily trending towards an imminent return.

The Dodgers entered the All-Star break two games removed from snapping a seven-game losing skid and were swept in the first series after the Midsummer Classic. Especially with the trade deadline inching closer, Friedman discussed the need to see the big picture and not be a victim of the moment.

“It’s always tricky when you’re in the midst of a swoon in team performance, because in those moments you feel like we need everything,” Friedman said. “So for us, it’s about, all right, let’s look ahead to August, September. Let’s look at what our best-case scenario is. Let’s look at, if we have a few injuries here and there, what areas are we exposed? What areas do we feel like we have depth?”

Perhaps the Dodgers will stray away from rotational help and focus on other areas that don’t have All-Star caliber players returning from the injured list ahead of the trade deadline. Relief pitching in particular has been a point of contention during recent trade deadlines, but only time will tell what LA decides to do to fortify their chances of another title.
