Will Smith Confident Dodgers Will Right the Ship: ‘We’re the Best Team in Baseball’

The Los Angeles Dodgers have experienced many ups and downs this season, most recently blowing a five-run lead to the Padres on Tuesday. San Diego’s Donovan Solano hit a walk-off RBI to defeat the Dodgers 6-5 at Petco Park. The loss against the Padres was the fifth in the Dodgers’ last seven games.

Injuries have also been a major issue for Los Angeles this season. Three-time All-Star Mookie Betts and Max Muncy are key position players who are currently sidelined.

Dodgers starting pitchers have been the main victims of injuries this season. Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Walker Buehler have been absent from the mound. Inconsistency is another issue for the rotation. Bobby Miller, who was expected to be a crucial piece of the Dodgers’ rotation, was sent to Triple-A after the worst start in his career.

The rotation recently added three pitchers that will bolster their unreliable rotation. The returns of Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw from injury, in addition to acquiring Tigers’ Jack Flaherty, at the deadline will significantly improve the rotation.

Despite the struggles the Dodgers have faced this season, one veteran is certain the club will persevere through the hardships.

“It’s a long year,” Dodgers two-time NL All-Star catcher Will Smith said to The Orange County Register. “There’s going to be injuries. There’s going to be tough times. There’s going to be good times which have been this year. So, yeah, it’s part of it. We’ll come out of it. No doubt about it.

“We’re the Dodgers. We’re the best team in baseball.”

  1. Will is fooling himself. The Dodgers have very little offense beyond Ootaney and he’s a big part of the problem. There is only so much you ask from your catcher beyond being prepared for games with the pitching staff and providing solid defense, but the Dodger hype machine has him as the next Jonny Bench with the bat. Being scorching hot for a month and then doing nothing for two months is not up to the hype. Unfortunately, Will is being more the politician when he says things like this. It’s not credible and other teams are proving it to the Dodgers.

  2. Every year a rested Will Smith starts each season off crushing the ball. Then as the season wears on, Will ‘s offense disappears. I would not have signed him to a 10 year contract.

This team is such a disaster. Absolutely no pitching. Our offense probably leads the league in strikeouts. My confidence level right now is a 2 out of 10. And with the Padres having one of the easiest remaining schedules, I don’t think we win the division. And if the Padres don’t catch us, we have Arizona on fire. The Dodgers team probably couldn’t beat the Whitesox now. Pathetic.

  3. The Dodgers are not the BEST team in baseball. There is a requirement for that and that is in the past tense. When you win the WS then say it. The pitching is spotty and the hitting is below average at the moment. I think SD Padres are looking like the best in the West right now. Dodgers need a lot of side lined players to come back and perform. Will they? I am not convinced.

  4. Will should not have run his mouth about this but by the end of August with Mookie back, Edman plugging holes wherever they are and hopefully a healthy Muncy Dodgers will be fine. Sure the Friars and Snakes have good teams, but Dodgers will still win the division.

  5. Regardless who catches Tuesday night, the story will be Kershaw. I hope he is better than I anticipate.
