Why Isn’t Miguel Rojas Playing More For the Dodgers?

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas is one of the Dodgers’ most consistent infielders when he’s on the field — the problem is he has been limited from playing too much this season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained that Rojas has been dealing with general soreness in his leg over the last few weeks, which has kept him from having more consistent playing time, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.

Through 38 games so far this season, the 35-year-old veteran is slashing .283/.336/.434 with 28 hits, 12 runs, two home runs, and 12 RBIs. He has the fifth-highest batting average on the team this year, behind the big four of Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and catcher Will Smith. He’s been effective when needed, but has been prevented from playing more due to the soreness.

The Dodgers especially need extra infield help with the injury to third baseman Max Muncy, who is not progressing from an oblique injury as well as he’d like to. Muncy has been out since May 15, and Rojas has helped fill in for him along with Chris Taylor and Kiké Hernández. Having Rojas and Muncy would be ideal for the Dodgers, giving the team optimal flexibility on defense and to minimize mistakes in the infield.

However, Roberts doesn’t want to push his 35-year-old infielder too much, as he knows how important it is for him to be healthy over the course of a long season.

So while Rojas has been one of the Dodgers’ most consistent hitters this season, there’s a good reason for why he hasn’t become an everyday player.
