Los Angeles Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke about the Dodgers’ plans for the remainder of the trade deadline period.
The Dodgers made a splash Saturday, sending three prospects to the Detroit Tigers for two-time Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal, and may not be done just yet. Friedman said the Dodgers are still in conversations, but aren’t likely to add more to their big-league roster.
That’s not to say the Dodgers couldn’t trade more players from their MLB roster, though, as Eric Lauer and Alex Call are both intriguing trade chips as the Dodgers head into the Aug. 3 deadline.
What Would the Dodgers Want to Add?
The Dodgers didn’t have many needs heading into the trade deadline, though Skubal was a no-brainer for the reigning champions to pursue.
In June, Katie Woo of The Athletic reported the Dodgers aimed to improve their pitching in the minors by trading some of their outfield prospects. Of the Dodgers’ seven highest ranked prospects, five of them play in the outfield.
“The Dodgers want to improve the depth of their minor-league system and are prepared to part with at least one of their top outfield prospects not named Josue De Paula to do so,” Woo wrote.
“…The Dodgers are comfortable dealing from that position group to address other areas of their farm system, such as catching and middle-infield depth.
“The Dodgers’ starting pitching is thin in the upper minors, aside from River Ryan and Jackson Ferris. Los Angeles is believed to be searching for high-ceiling prospects in a potential trade and isn’t necessarily coveting major-league-ready talent in a return.”
With River Ryan now in the Tigers’ organization, this need has become much more important for the Dodgers.
Which Prospects Could the Dodgers Trade?
Zyhir Hope went to the Tigers in the Tarik Skubal trade as well, and was one of the names the Dodgers were likely to move at the deadline to address their needs. Top prospects Josue De Paula and Mike Sirota aren’t likely to move this window, though No. 3 prospect Edgardo Quintero is a player to keep an eye on, as he was removed from High-A Great Lakes’ game on Sunday.

After today’s game with Rushing being scratched from the lineup and the mediocre play of Alphonso, the Dodgers really need another catcher who can catch the ball, preferably a RH contact hitter with some playoff experience.
I would like to see them get a better catcher and a couple of better relief pitchers.
