Brent Honeywell No Longer Has a Locker; Dodgers to Promote Ben Casparius
The Los Angeles Dodgers are calling up another young pitcher to potentially make his major league debut and designated another for assignment.
Ben Casparius, is expected to be added to the 40-man roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Corresponding moves to make room for him include transferring River Ryan to the 60-day injured list and DFA’ing Brent Honeywell, according to the Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya.
Transferring Ryan opens up a spot on the 40-man and DFA’ing Honeywell gives him an opening on the 26-man roster. Honeywell was out of options.
Per Ardaya’s post on X, Casparius will be available out of the bullpen for length.
The 25-year-old has progressed each season with Los Angeles since he was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. He has been promoted mid-season in each of the four years with the organization making his way to Triple-A Oklahoma City on May 7.
In 13 Triple-A starts this season, Casparius is 3-3 with a 3.54 earned run average. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is nearly 2-to-1 as he has struck out 61 batters and walked 29. Opposing hitters are batting .191 against him across 56 innings.
His most recent start was his most dominant of the season, going six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and no walks against the Round Rock Express on Sunday.
Before the Dodgers promoted him to Oklahoma City, Casparius was 2-1 in five starts at Double-A Tulsa with a 3.32 ERA. He also spent about a month on the injured list from mid-May to mid-June.
Caparius joined the Dodgers organization after a stellar season at the University of Connecticut in 2021. He received ABCA First Team All-Region honors in his first and only season pitching for the Huskies. He earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors and pitched his way onto the BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament team.
He finished second in UConn’s single-season history with 127 strikeouts and ranked No. 12 in the country in strikeouts. He led the Huskies and BIG EAST Conference in starts (15), wins (8), innings pitched (91.2) and strikeouts (127).
The right-hander will become the second UCONN player to make his big league debut with the Dodgers joining fellow starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan, who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Honeywell finished his stint with the Dodgers with a 2.21 ERA and allowed six runs (five earned), over 20.1 innings across 10 appearances, with 12 strikeouts and four walks.

Panic much? Honey was doing well.
Maren: Emmet Sheehan went to Boston College (though he did grow up in Connecticut.)
Four innings max, please, Dave! If the are pitching lights out, maybe one more. Rookies flame out in the 5th/6 th innings, then have to get Tommy John.
This move makes no sense to me. Honeywell had a great ERA and was pretty reliable and could pitch multiple innings. Casparious seems like someone who needs more time in the minors. I thought Honeywell was a great find. I just don’t get it.
Me neither! Are they losing their minds over at the Ravine?
I though Honeywell did a good job. He won’t have any trouble finding another gig.
