The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is honoring an all-time Los Angeles Dodgers great and current broadcaster with a showbusiness honor.
Orel Hershiser, the World Series winning pitcher, is getting star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of Sports Entertainment, reports Variety.
Hershiser’s ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 13, and his star will be at 6755 Hollywood Blvd., near the intersection with McCadden Place.
Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that Hershiser’s ceremony will be emceed by the legendary broadcaster Bob Costas.
Also speaking at the event will be another all-time Dodgers pitching great, Clayton Kershaw, as well as Hershiser’s SportsNet LA broadcasting partner Joe Davis.
Also on the bill are Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and former Dodgers Spanish-language broadcaster Jaime Jarrin.
Dave Roberts praises Orel Hershiser ahead of Walk of Fame induction
Dodgers Nation’s Noel Sanchez asked Roberts on Friday about Hershiser’s induction, and Roberts was full of praise for the accomplishment.
“I don’t want to give all of my material away now, but he deserves it,” Roberts said. “He’s one of the great Dodgers and he’s a friend, and for me to tell a little story, I think it’s great … Orel’s got a nice legacy, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
What was Orel Hershiser like as a Dodger?
Hershiser will always be beloved by Dodgers fans for the 13 years he spent in Dodger Blue, including the first 12 of his big league career.
He came in third in Rookie of the Year voting in 1984, but he peaked between 1987 and 1989, all of three of which were All-Star years for him.
He won the Cy Young Award in 1988, leading the majors with a 23-8 record, including 15 complete games that season.
He also was the World Series MVP, helping the Dodgers capture their last title before this recent run of championships.
That season, he also had a streak of 59 straight innings without allowing a run, a record that still stands.
