Dodgers Activate Miguel Rojas, Michael Grove, Demote James Outman

The Dodgers made a series of roster moves ahead of their series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium.

None of the moves constituted a surprise: Miguel Rojas and Michael Grove were activated from the injured list, while James Outman was optioned. Although the Dodgers did not list a destination for Outman on their Twitter/X account, according to the official transactions log he’s headed back to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Meanwhile, Brusdar Graterol was placed on the 15-day injured list one day after he suffered a Grade 3 hamstring strain. The choice of the 15-day placement as opposed to the 60-day IL is essentially a procedural move. Graterol’s season might well be over and the Dodgers might simply wait to move him to the 60-day IL until they need a 40-man roster spot.

Graterol threw eight pitches against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, recording one out. He had spent the entirety of the season on the injured list recuperating from a shoulder injury before his hamstring betrayed him in his debut.

It’s the third time Outman, 27, has been optioned this season. He’s logged a .520 OPS with four homers and 11 RBIs in 135 at-bats with the Dodgers this season.

Grove was activated after missing 42 games with a right intercostal strain. Prior to the injury he was 4-3 with a 5.06 ERA in 28 games, but had been pitching better after a rocky April. A converted starter, Grove had a 2.45 ERA in 21 games from April 10 to June 7, striking out 36 batters while walking just nine in 25.2 innings. He only started one game during that span.

Rojas, 35, served as the designated hitter for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday in his only minor league rehab game. He was placed on the injured list July 22 with a minor forearm injury.

Before the injury, Rojas was hitting .271 with three home runs and 21 RBIs this season. He had assumed the starting shortstop’s job from Mookie Betts when Betts fractured his hand in June, and offered a defensive upgrade at the position in Betts’ absence.

Rojas is batting sixth and playing shortstop Wednesday against the Phillies, who send rookie right-hander Tyler Phillips to the mound against Dodgers right-hander Gavin Stone.
