Dodgers’ Blake Snell Says Giants Didn’t Even Talk to Him in Free Agency: ‘I Was Shocked’

Blake Snell has been in a relationship with the National League West for quite some time. First, he joined the San Diego Padres ahead of the 2021 season. Then, he signed with the San Francisco Giants before last season.

This offseason, the relationship continued when he signed a five-year, $182 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

However, Snell revealed that his breakup with the Giants was more like a ghosting which led him into the arms of the Dodgers.

“The Giants didn’t even talk to me,” Snell told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. “It was surprising — I thought they really liked me.

“I know Bob loves me, and I’m really close with Logan and Chappy. So I was shocked. I thought they’d come after me right away. I really liked it there. I was happy there. But they never even said anything to me.

“I texted (manager) Bob (Melvin) and he didn’t reply, and Bob always replies to me, so I kind of had a feeling. But it was weird, especially with all the other teams that were interested in me.”

Since Snell opted out of his deal with the Giants on Nov. 1, he and Melvin have spoken and their relationship is fine, but it was the left-hander who was forced to walk away from San Francisco.

After a first half that saw him try to regain his form after missing most of spring training, he was the Blake Snell that Major League Baseball has gotten to know quite well in the second half. He went undefeated with a 1.45 ERA and a .133 opponents average.

Snell simply wanted his value reassessed. He proved he could go deep into games with his first-career complete game — a no-hitter at Cincinnati on Aug. 2.

The veteran made it clear that he wanted to stay in California but was left stunned when he never heard from the Giants. However, he is grateful to be with the Dodgers. He’s going through a full spring and is ready to help them defend their World Series title.
