Dodgers’ Cable Network Makes Major Accommodation to Cord-Cutters

To accommodate cord-cutters Spectrum is offering subscribers with both Internet and mobile services the ability to watch regular season Dodger games on SportsNet LA for free. When the network launched more than a decade ago, a Time Warner cable subscription was a prerequisite. Now, in an era when fewer people subscribe to cable and often stream their television content instead, SportsNet LA’s parent company is loosening that restriction.

This is a huge move by Spectrum, but there is a catch. Subscribers have to live inside the Dodgers home television territory.

Spectrum initially announced the news in March.

“We are constantly exploring ways to maximize value for our customers,” said Sharon Peters, EVP for Charter Communications, which operates the Spectrum brand. “This innovative offer enhances Spectrum’s suite of connectivity products and services for both new and existing customers, while also extending the availability of Dodgers games to more fans in the LA area, on us.”

The streaming agreement is only in place for this season as the cable company gets a real-life test to see whether fans might respond more favorably to a streaming-only option or a broadband-telephone-streaming bundle.

“In the evolving TV landscape, we are examining different approaches to making our regional sports networks available to fans while maximizing value for our customers,” Spectrum spokesman Bret Picciolo said.

  1. They’re still trying to gatekeep it by forcing people to have Internet and mobile service to get it. I have no need for their mobile service and they keep raising prices. Fiber internet almost live in my area, going to be dropping Spectrum services as soon as I can.
