Dodgers’ Chuckie Robinson in San Francisco Hinting at Will Smith IL Move

Los Angeles Dodgers backup catcher Chuckie Robinson is with the team in San Francisco on Saturday, hinting at All-Star Will Smith requiring an injured list stint. Since Robinson was optioned within the last 15 days, he can only be called up if someone is placed on the IL.

Manager Dave Roberts recently spoke on the possibility of Smith heading to the IL, and having Robinson up with the team from Triple-A is far from a promising sign.

Smith suffered a bone bruise against the Pittsburgh Pirates exactly 10 days ago when a foul ball hit his hand. He was sidelined for six days before returning to the lineup on Tuesday, going 1-for-4 with a double. He was originally in Wednesday’s lineup, but was a late scratch due to swelling in his hand during pregame warmups.

Roberts recently addressed Smith’s hand, hoping that things would look less bleak at this point in his recovery.

“It’s still there. It doesn’t feel great,” Roberts said. “It’s getting better each day but still not 100 percent.

“I think after his first game back (Tuesday) and just feeling with all the tests we’ve done to come up negative and the swelling has dissipated … we thought we’d be in a better spot,” Roberts said. “But at least there’s improvement each day.”

The other backstop for LA, rookie Dalton Rushing, has been on the injured list since Sept. 6 with a right shin contusion. Sustaining his injury so close to Smith’s has created quite the stir in LA, but trade deadline acquisition Ben Rortvedt’s emergence has provided invaluable relief in the meantime.

As for Robinson, despite starting his 2025 campaign as a member of the Los Angeles Angels’ organization, has yet to log a big league appearance. He is hitting .261 throughout 75 Triple-A appearances in both LA team’s systems, with five home runs and 46 RBIs.
